Grant susurró: “No.”

“¡No!

It rested on the sweetheart table.

White satin.

Covered in crystals.

Exactly where she had left it.

“Open it,” Grant said.

Chloe stepped in front of the table.

“No.”

Grant stared at her.

“Open the bag.”

“It’s my property.”

“My grandmother’s ring is supposedly missing.”

Eleanor moved quickly.

“Grant, sweetheart, emotions are high.”

“Do not call me sweetheart.”

His voice was low.

Furious.

“I watched my wife hide the ring she accused a pregnant woman of stealing.”

Chloe’s face twisted.

“You don’t understand.”

Grant took the clutch.

Chloe tried to grab it.

He pushed her hand away.

Then he opened the interior pocket.

His fingers stopped.

He pulled out a velvet pouch.

A gasp exploded through the ballroom.

Grant opened it.

The ring glittered beneath the chandelier light.

Chloe looked around at two hundred witnesses.

For the first time all evening, she had absolutely nothing to say.

Daniel turned toward me.

His face looked broken.

“Vivienne…”

I stood slowly, blanket over my torn gown.

“No.”

He stopped.

“You do not speak until I am finished.”

Everyone watched.

My voice remained calm.

“You handed my purse to a woman who called me a parasite.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“You watched your mother tear my dress.”

“I didn’t know she would—”

“You watched after she did it.”

He flinched.

“You let your sister dump my prenatal vitamins onto the floor like evidence from a crime scene.”

“Vivienne, I was trying to keep things from getting worse.”

I stared at him.

“For whom?”

He had no answer.

“For me?” I asked. “Or for them?”

Silence.

I looked at Marcus.

“Where is my father?”

“On his way.”

Eleanor finally seemed to recover.

She stepped toward me with false confidence.

“So this was a misunderstanding.”

I looked at her.

“A misunderstanding?”

“The ring was found. No harm was done.”

I slowly glanced down at my torn dress.

Then at the bruise forming on my arm.

Luego a mi marido.

“¿No pasa nada?”

La confianza de Eleanor se debilitó.

Miré a Marcus.
