Vanessa had begun crying now.
But Daniel knew her tears.
He had believed them before.
Not anymore.
Lily whispered, “I wanted you to come home.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Those words landed harder than anything that had happened in the previous minute.
“I’m here.”
“You were gone.”
“I know.”
“They said you wouldn’t believe me.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
“Who said that?”
Lily looked at Vanessa.
Daniel’s expression changed again.
Not anger this time.
Understanding.
A colder kind.
He looked at his wife.
“How long?”
Vanessa stared at him.
“How long has this been happening?”
“Daniel—”
“How long?”
“I have never abused your daughter.”
Several guests shifted.
Daniel looked toward them.
“Anyone who recorded what happened today, do not delete it.”
Vanessa’s head snapped toward him.
“What?”
Daniel pulled his phone from his pocket.
“Do not delete anything.”
“Daniel, you are completely overreacting.”
He dialed.
“Who are you calling?”
“The police.”
Margaret stood in the doorway.
“Have you lost your mind?”
Daniel looked directly at her.
“No.”
For the first time that afternoon, his voice was completely calm.
“I think I just got it back.”
Vanessa walked toward him.
“Put the phone down.”
Daniel moved Lily behind him.
“Don’t come closer.”
“We are husband and wife.”
“Not after today.”
Her face went pale.
Guests stared openly now.
Daniel spoke into the phone.
“Yes. I need officers at my home.”
Vanessa laughed once, breathlessly.
“You’re calling the police because I disciplined a child?”
Daniel looked at Lily.
“No.”
He turned back toward Vanessa.
“I’m calling because a room full of adults stood here while my daughter was humiliated and restrained, and I want every single person who participated to explain themselves to someone wearing a badge.”
The first sirens arrived twelve minutes later.
Those twelve minutes felt longer than the entire afternoon.
Daniel wrapped Lily in a towel and sat with her on the far end of the patio. She leaned against his chest while he whispered that none of what had happened was her responsibility.
Vanessa remained near the fallen flower stand, speaking rapidly to Margaret.
Guests began leaving.
Daniel stopped them.
“Officers may need your statements.”
Several remained reluctantly.
Others claimed emergencies.
One woman approached Daniel.
Her name was Claire Bennett. Daniel vaguely recognized her as the wife of one of Vanessa’s former coworkers.
“I have the entire thing on video,” she whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
“Why didn’t you stop it?”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I should have.”
He didn’t comfort her.
She looked down.
“I’m sorry.”
“Save the recording.”
“I already uploaded it privately so it can’t be deleted.”
Daniel nodded.
It was the first useful thing any adult had done.
When the police entered the backyard, the elegant celebration no longer existed.
Flowers covered the grass.
A chair lay overturned.
