David sah mich endlich an.
“Grace, sag das nicht.”
“Warum?
Lily sah ihn an.
“Du hast sie gehört?”
David schluckte.
Robert grabbed his phone.
“I’m calling the police.”
“Please do. Tell them you threatened the legal owner of the property after deliberately humiliating a child.”
His thumb stopped above the screen.
Vanessa quietly gathered her purse.
Ethan caught her arm.
“Where are you going?”
“I’m not getting arrested over your parents’ house.”
“No one is leaving,” Helen snapped. “We settle family matters as a family.”
“You stopped treating us like family a long time ago,” I said.
I took Lily’s hand.
David moved toward us.
“Grace, wait. Let’s go home and discuss this.”
“You can stay.”
His eyes widened.
“What?”
“You can help your parents pack. Lily and I are going home.”
He lowered his voice.
“Don’t do this in front of everyone.”
“You allowed them to do worse to Lily in front of everyone.”
“It was one steak.”
“No. It was six years.”
Lily squeezed my hand.
I could feel her trembling.
We walked toward the front door.
Behind us, Helen began shouting orders.
“David, stop her! Ethan, call our lawyer! Robert, do something!”
I kept walking.
Then David called my name.
I turned.
He stood beneath the chandelier, surrounded by the family he had chosen over us again and again.
“There’s something you need to know,” he said.
I waited.
He glanced at Ethan.
Ethan’s expression became dangerous.
“Don’t,” Ethan warned.
David’s hands shook.
“The foreclosure wasn’t caused by Mom and Dad.”
Robert shouted, “Keep your mouth shut!”
David looked at me.
“Ethan took the money.”
Lily and I stopped.
“What money?” I asked.
David closed his eyes.
“The money from your company.”
My blood went cold.
I walked back into the dining room.
“Explain.”
Ethan tried to laugh.
“He’s upset. He doesn’t know what he’s saying.”
David pointed at his brother.
“Ethan used my access code to transfer money from one of Grace’s project accounts.”
“How much?”
David could barely answer.
“Eight hundred thousand dollars.”
The room seemed to tilt.
I had discovered accounting irregularities two months earlier, but my finance director believed they were caused by duplicate contractor invoices.
David worked as an outside operations consultant for the company.
He had access to those accounts.
I stared at him.
“How long have you known?”
“Three weeks.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“I was trying to fix it.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“You were involved too.”
David shook his head.
“I never agreed to steal.”
“But you helped move the money.”
Lily tightened her grip on my hand.
Helen looked at me without shame.
“You have millions. Ethan needed a chance to start his business.”
“He stole from my employees.”
“He borrowed it.”
“Then why did he hide it?”
Robert moved between Ethan and me.
“You’re not calling anyone.”
I slowly took out my phone.
Ethan smiled.
“You should listen to him.”
“Why?”
“Because if I go down, David goes with me.”
I looked at my husband.
He didn’t deny it.
At that moment, the lights went out.
Lily schrie.
